Maintaining a Healthy Lymphatic System

*This post is in partnership with Pascoe Canada.

The lymphatic system is crucial for protecting the body from illness and inflammation. The lymphatic system is the body’s drainage system which consists of blood vessels and lymph nodes that help to carry fluids from the tissues and move them throughout the body and into the blood.

The main role of the lymphatic system is to protect the body from infections and bad bacteria.

The lymphatic system is similar to the circulatory system as it is made up of veins, arteries and capillaries that all deliver essential fluids to the body.

Every day, we come into contact with bacteria, pathogens, toxins and microbes. These can enter into our body and can enter into the lymphatic fluid.

The fluid can become trapped in the lymph nodes and the immune system then proceeds to attack the threat against the body.

When someone becomes sick or injured, they may experience swelling, pain, or fluid retention. Illnesses such as urinary tract infections, strep throat, colds and sore throats can all cause swelling of the lymph nodes.

We can find lymph nodes all throughout the body such as the throat, chest, groin, armpits, and abdomen.

It is essential to support the lymphatic system to ensure that we have proper drainage within the body. This will help to support our body and reduce the risk or illness or infection by supporting the immune system.

Does Your Lymphatic System Need Support?

Try these supporting methods and tools:

Deep breathing:

Did you know that our bodies have three times more lymph fluid than blood? As we don’t have a specific organ to pump it, the pumping action of deep breathing will help the lymphatic system to transport the toxins into the blood before they are detoxified by the liver.

I love to use the 4-7-8 breathing technique. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds and breathe out for 8 seconds.

Getting proper sleep:

Receiving proper sleep is essential for so many functions of the body especially gut health as it improves the quality of bacteria in the gut. It is also important for our immune system as 80% of our immune system resides within our gut. Sleep helps to reduce stress within the body which will allow for proper lymphatic flow.

Dry skin brushing:

Since our skin is our largest organ, it is important to support and nurture it. One of my favourite ways is to dry skin brush. Using a skin brush, brush your skin in an upward movement towards the heart for 10 minutes. Your skin helps to detoxify the body so it is helpful to stimulate it and to remove toxins and dead skin cells from it. It helps the lymphatic system by removing toxins from the body which can help to reduce inflammation in the body.

Once you have finished dry skin brushing, have a hot/cold shower to further stimulate the lymphatic system.

Anti-inflammatory Diet:

Focusing on an anti-inflammatory diet can be helpful to reduce inflammation in the body. By focusing on nutrient-dense foods that reduce stress and inflammation in the body, will help to improve the lymphatic system, digestive system, circulatory and immune function.

Items to keep on hand can include green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, berries, salmon, nuts and seeds, coconut oil, olive oil, ginger, turmeric and garlic.

Detox bath:

Having a nice warm bath can be soothing and detoxifying to the body. Here is a simple recipe for a detox bath:

  • 1 1/2 cups dead sea salts
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup real salt
  • 1/8 cup bentonite clay
  • 7 drops lavender essential oil
  • 7 drops frankincense essential oil

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a glass mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and mix with a non-metal spoon {metal can destroy the healing properties of the clay}.
  2. Store in an air-tight glass jar.

Movement (walking):

Exercise can be helpful to keep the lymph fluid flowing. The type of workout does not need to be anything strenuous, it can be as simple as walking, stretching, yoga, pilates etc.

Clockwise belly massage:

This is a simple, yet effective way to stimulate the lymphatic system. Begin by pressing your palms flat down onto the area in between your hip bones. With hands overlapping, make circular movements around the navel button 5 times.

Gua Sha:

Gua Sha is a new favourite of mine as it helps to increase the blood flow along with stimulating the lymphatic system. To give your face a gentle gua sha massage, begin at the chin, then move the gua sha along the jawline and up near the ear. Work your way behind the earlobe and then back down the neck. Repeat this three times.
