Supporting the Body’s Detox Pathways

*This post is in partnership with Pascoe Canada.

When most people think of the body detoxing, they think of the liver. While the liver has a large role in supporting the body to naturally detox, there are many other organs involved in the process. All of our systems are connected and support each other to ensure the body is detoxing efficiently. The systems of our body would not be able to work alone as they rely on each other for support. This is why it is important to work on all of the detox pathways and not just the liver.

One way that our body keeps us healthy is through the multiple detox pathways. These pathways are used to eliminate toxins and chemicals that the body does not need. The detoxification pathways include the liver, colon, spleen, lungs, kidneys and skin (lymph).

Here’s what they do for us each and every day, and how we can boost their natural purifying power…

LIVER:

The liver is the most important detox pathway, however, it relies on the other organs to function properly. The liver helps to process toxins to assist the body in making them easier to eliminate. These toxins can include harmful chemicals, heavy metals, alcohol and drugs. The liver also makes bile which helps the body to eliminate fat-soluble toxins like hormones and heavy metals.

COLON

The colon detoxes the body by eliminating toxic waste that the body does not need. It can also be referred to as part of the digestive system or the gut. The gut greatly affects our overall health and immune system.

A condition called leaky gut is becoming more common. Leaky gut is when small microscopic holes develop in the intestinal lining allowing bacteria, pathogens, food particles and toxins to enter into the bloodstream. This has been linked with celiac disease, diabetes, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and food allergies. Leaky gut can occur for a number of different reasons but a common reason is the lack of elimination from the colon which allows bad bacteria to build up and fester. Ideally, you should be eliminating at least once a day to be properly removing the toxins from your body.

The colon is a very large part of the digestive system. It reabsorbs water from digested food and turns what is left into stool. The stool is released from the body by what is known as a bowel movement. A healthy balance of fibre from fruits and vegetables and herbs can improve detoxification and elimination of the colon.

SPLEEN

The spleen is part of the lymphatic system. This system is also important for detoxification as it supports the body to carry waste from the tissues to the blood. The spleen also helps to keep your blood clean and moves waste away from the muscles and joints.

LUNGS

Toxins can be breathed in especially for those who smoke or live in heavily polluted areas. Lungs help to remove toxins by breathing out the gases. The lungs are responsible for filtering out carbon dioxide, fumes, mould and other airborne toxins.

Even household cleaners can be quite toxic when we inhale the fumes. These toxins can have a negative impact on our respiratory system, hormones and can be linked to multiple illnesses.

An air purifier can be a great investment along with house plants, non-toxic cleaning supplies and products.

KIDNEYS

The kidneys have an important job of filtering the blood from harmful substances such as medications and other chemical substances and excretes them in the form of urine. It is important to stay hydrated for proper kidney function. Herbs can also be used to support the kidneys which we will get to shortly in this post!

SKIN & LYMPH

If the detox pathways such as the liver, kidneys or lungs are not functioning correctly, then the skin and lymph nodes can be negatively impacted. When these pathways are not functioning, the body then relies on the skin. The skin will then evacuate the toxins through sweat and the sweat glands. Your skin’s role is to excrete toxins that have found their way inside, as well as protect the body from bacteria, viruses, and chemical toxins from entering in the first place.

The skin is our largest organ with a total area of approximately 20 square feet. It is important to be cautious of what products we use including toiletries, cosmetics, and household cleaners which can contain harmful ingredients that get absorbed into our bloodstream. Detoxification Support

Most individuals will need to give their organs a little extra support from time-to-time. We are all unique and depending on our lifestyle and dietary habits, the timing for detox support will vary from person-to-person.

Our body is excellent at giving us clues for when things are off and need a little bit of extra support. For example, if you are experiencing low energy, brain fog, headaches, unexplained weight gain, digestive issues (IBS), skin blemishes or sleep issues, your body could be giving you a clue that is it time for a tune-up.

Pascoe Canada’s Detox Kit can be helpful in opening up the detox pathways. The kit is a homeopathic remedy that includes Lymphdiaral, Quassia Similiaplex, Junipurius Similiaplex. It can assist the body with sinus congestion, indigestion, hives, bloating, irritability, fatigue, headaches, and constipation. The products are made from plant-based naturally sourced medicinal ingredients that aid in the detoxification process. Pascoe’s Detox Kit works to help eliminate unwanted toxins from the body.

Detoxification promotes the following functions:

• Lymph transport

• Liver enzyme and bile production

• Digestive performance

• Kidney and bladder function

This results in the following sequence of events:

• Increased flow of lymph

• Improved “flushing” of the interstitial space (= matrix)

• Lymph carries released toxins off into the blood

• Detoxification by liver enzymes

• Metabolites (metabolic wastes) are excreted via the feces

The kit includes three components:

Lymphdiaral

Lymphdiaral helps to open the detox pathway on the lymph nodes. It supports the body to relieve symptoms of swelling, inflammation, and infection, such as pain fever and swollen lymph nodes due to recurrent conditions including otitis media tonsillitis and sinusitis. It is made with calendula and echinacea.

Improving lymph flow can:

  • Improve immune function
  • Support the removal of toxins
  • Decrease swelling
  • Reduce inflammation

Quassia Similiaplex

Quassia Similiaplex supports the liver and the colon. It can help in times of digestive weakness, abdominal pain, gas and painful bowel movements.

It also supports the liver and biliary disorders, weakness in the liver, hemorrhoids and varicose veins.

Junipurius Similiaplex

Junipurius Similiaplex helps to reduce inflammation and irritation of the urinary organs, kidney pain, and excretory disorders of the urinary tract.

While using Pascoe Canada’s Detox Kit, the following should also be done:

  • Consume more fruit and vegetables
  • Drink more water and reduce coffee and soft drinks
  • Exercise regularly, even a walk in the park or a short bicycle ride
  • Avoid stress as much as possible
  • Keep a healthy acid-base balance by taking Basentabs pH-balance
